A Method for Computing Slip-Line Fields with Stress Discontinuity in Cohesionless Backfills

A method for computing slip-line fields in the case of cohesionless backfills with stress discontinuity was proposed. The potential failure zone is divided into Rankine and transition zone, rigorously determined using theory plastic mechanics. are then further a series triangular slices. On basis force moment equilibrium conditions typical slice, recurrence equation lateral established. Furthermore, relationship between surface inclination angle interslice established by satisfying Mohr–Coulomb criterion. An iterative procedure calculating slices changing performed until satisfies condition boundary, resulting line if intersect intersection characteristics discontinuity. Example studies to verify present method, which shows that soil–wall interface friction has most significant effect on discontinuity, location gradually approaches backfill an increase retaining wall inclination.
